External thermal insulation: the main stages of an ETICS project
Published on

ETICS is a system: insulation, fixings, base coat, mesh, primer and finish work together. Durability depends on compatible layers and careful execution at every stage.
The main stages
- Assess wall type, flatness, moisture and condition.
- Clean, remove loose areas and repair cracks.
- Bond insulation boards with tight, staggered joints.
- Add the mechanical fixings specified by the system.
- Embed reinforcement mesh in the base coat with correct overlaps.
- Apply primer and finish under suitable conditions.
- Treat reveals, sills, corners, base tracks and junctions.
A system, not a mix of products
Every layer is designed to work with the others. Replacing a component with an unspecified product may compromise adhesion and impact resistance. Follow the manufacturer’s documented system.
Preparation determines the result
A damp, weak or uneven substrate becomes trapped under the insulation. Assessment and preparation prevent many later defects.
Take care of details
Problems often appear around windows, corners and material junctions. Suitable profiles, reinforcement and sealants must be planned with the order.
Follow technical documentation
Thicknesses, drying times and application conditions vary by system. Check technical sheets and professional rules before work begins.
